Super Visa requirements: a practical checklist for families
The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadians and permanent residents to make long visits. Most delays come from small gaps in documents. Use this checklist, then confirm current details on IRCC's Super Visa page.
1. The host (child or grandchild)
- Is the applicant's biological or adopted child or grandchild
- Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian
- Is at least 18 and lives in Canada
- Meets the minimum necessary income for the household size
- Writes and signs an invitation letter
2. Income proof
The income requirement depends on household size and is updated by IRCC. Gather recent tax documents and employment proof, and check the current table before applying.
3. Insurance
- Private health insurance valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry
- From a Canadian insurance company, or a company outside Canada approved by the minister
- Meets IRCC's coverage rules
Buy or confirm the policy carefully. Insurance that doesn't meet the rules is a common reason for problems.
4. The applicant (parent or grandparent)
- Applies from outside Canada
- Is admissible to Canada
- Completes an immigration medical exam
- Shows proof of the family relationship
5. Invitation letter
The letter should clearly state the host's promise of financial support, the household members and the visit details. A well organized letter helps the officer follow your file.
