Can my spouse visit Canada while our sponsorship is in process?
Many couples ask whether a pending spousal sponsorship stops the sponsored spouse from visiting. It does not, by itself. A spouse or partner can apply for a visitor visa while the sponsorship is in process.
What the officer looks at
- The purpose and length of the visit
- Whether the person will respect the conditions of their stay
- Finances for the trip
- Travel history and ties
- The relationship and the pending application
Canadian law accepts that someone can intend to immigrate in the future and still be a genuine visitor now, as long as the officer is satisfied they will leave if required at the end of the authorized stay.
Be open about the sponsorship
Always disclose a pending sponsorship or any past application. Leaving it out can lead to misrepresentation concerns, which are far more serious than a refusal.
How to make the application stronger
- A clear cover letter explaining the visit and your plans
- Organized relationship evidence
- Proof of funds and, where relevant, the host's support
- Explanations for any past refusals
If the visitor route doesn't fit, sponsorship options and timelines are covered on my spousal sponsorship page.
