PR card renewal and the residency obligation, explained
Renewing a PR card is usually straightforward. The part that matters is the residency obligation.
The 730 day rule
Permanent residents generally must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days in every 5 year period. The days do not need to be continuous. If you have been a PR for less than 5 years, the requirement is assessed over the time since you became a PR.
Limited exceptions
Some time outside Canada can count in specific cases, such as accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or partner, or in some cases full time employment with a Canadian business outside Canada. These exceptions are narrow and need careful assessment.
How to count your days
- List every trip outside Canada in the period
- Use official travel records and your own records
- Subtract absences from the days in the period
- Keep a buffer if you are close to 730
Renew or apply for citizenship?
If you have at least 1,095 days in the last 5 years and meet the other requirements, citizenship may be the better step. I check both options in the consultation.
